Glass vs. Polycarbonate UTV Windshields: Which Should You Buy?

Glass or polycarbonate for your side-by-side? Compare scratch resistance, clarity, impact toughness, weight, wipers and cost before you choose.

The short answer

Choose glass if you mostly cruise, ride in dust or rain, and want the clearest view that stays clear for years. Choose polycarbonate if you ride tight, rocky or wooded trails where flying debris and branch strikes are the main risk. Both can be a good windshield — the right one depends on how you ride.

Scratch resistance and clarity

Glass is much harder than plastic, so it resists the fine scratches that build up from dust, sand and wiping. Untreated polycarbonate scratches more easily, although hard-coated polycarbonate narrows the gap. Glass also keeps its optical clarity over time, with less distortion and haze.

Impact toughness

Polycarbonate flexes instead of breaking, which is why it is popular for aggressive trail riding. Glass is more rigid and can crack under a hard strike. If you regularly ride through brush, rocks or low branches, factor that in.

Wipers and washers

Glass handles windshield wipers well, which matters if you ride in rain, mud or dust. Wiping a dry, dirty plastic windshield can scratch it. If working wipers and a washer are important to you, glass is the natural fit — front Fab FPF glass windshields include a complete wiper and washer kit.

Weight and cost

Polycarbonate is lighter and usually costs less. Glass is heavier and typically costs more, but it tends to hold its appearance longer. Compare the total package — frame, wiper, vents and warranty — not just the sticker price.

Frequently asked questions

Is glass or polycarbonate better for a UTV windshield?

Glass is better for clarity and scratch resistance and works well with wipers. Polycarbonate is better at absorbing hard impacts from branches and rocks. Pick based on how and where you ride.

Can you use wipers on a polycarbonate windshield?

It is possible but risky: wiping dirt across plastic can scratch it. Glass is the better surface for wipers.
